Leeds Through The Lens

Collaborative project for Leeds Art Gallery and Arts & Minds Network

Over the last couple of months I’ve had the pleasure of leading on ‘Leeds Through The Lens’ project for  Leeds Art Gallery and Arts and Minds Network, celebrating Leeds and photography as part of Peter Mitchells  ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ exhibition. And my goodness, I am so grateful. What an incredible group of people all with so much enthusiasm and creative energy. I’ve absolutely loved it from start to end.

Throughout the last two months we’ve been responding to Leeds as our subject, encouraging each other to look down, up and all around. We’ve studied storytelling, and discussed different ways of sharing our work… I’m currently tying up the final touches to our publication ‘About Town’ that’ll celebrate the project and all the work created this summer. We’ll be hosting a celebration and book sharing later this Autumn, down at the gallery.

The group was open to any Arts & Minds members, and no experience of photography was needed. Participants described how they had found the experience:

  • Wonderful people, great photography, welcoming and inclusive
  • A collaborative, humane, personalised supportive group
  • The project has been really interesting and inspiring, I’m tempted to start new photography projects of my own now

Thank you to community curator Clare for all the support (and biccies) throughout, Linda & Jane at Arts & Minds, Peter Mitchell for his time and tales, and to the whole group for showing me so much warmth and kindness week on week.
